How Do I Plan Inland Transport from Port to Factory for a Roll Forming Machine?

Inland transport planning depends on:

• ✔ Machine dimensions
• ✔ Total weight
• ✔ Oversize classification
• ✔ Distance from port
• ✔ Local road regulations
• ✔ Crane & unloading readiness

Ocean freight gets the machine to the country.
Inland transport gets it to production.

Step 1️⃣ Confirm Packed Dimensions & Weight

Before booking transport, confirm:

• ✔ Total packed weight
• ✔ Weight per module (if modular)
• ✔ Length
• ✔ Width
• ✔ Height on trailer
• ✔ Center of gravity

Never use factory footprint dimensions — use packed dimensions.

Step 2️⃣ Determine If It Is Oversized for Road Transport

Each country has legal limits for:

• ✔ Maximum width
• ✔ Maximum height
• ✔ Maximum axle weight
• ✔ Maximum trailer length

If your machine exceeds these:

You may need:

• ✔ Oversize transport permit
• ✔ Pilot vehicle
• ✔ Police escort
• ✔ Route approval
• ✔ Restricted travel hours

Oversize status increases cost and planning time.

Step 3️⃣ Choose the Correct Trailer Type

Common options:

Standard Flatbed

For container or modular machine sections.

Low Loader / Lowboy

For heavy or tall machinery.

Extendable Trailer

For long structural roll forming bases.

Trailer choice must match weight and center of gravity.

Step 4️⃣ Plan Route in Advance

Check:

• ✔ Bridge load limits
• ✔ Road width
• ✔ Tight turns
• ✔ Height restrictions
• ✔ Urban congestion
• ✔ Tunnel clearance
• ✔ Construction zones

Some routes require special approval before movement.

Step 5️⃣ Coordinate With Customs Broker

Confirm:

• ✔ Customs release issued
• ✔ Duties paid
• ✔ Container demurrage timeline
• ✔ Return container location

Delays in inland booking can cause container storage penalties.

Step 6️⃣ Confirm Insurance Coverage for Inland Leg

Marine insurance may not cover inland road transport automatically.

Confirm:

• ✔ Inland coverage included
• ✔ Carrier liability limits
• ✔ Additional coverage needed

The inland leg is often where damage occurs.

Step 7️⃣ Prepare Factory Site Before Departure From Port

Before truck leaves port, confirm:

• ✔ Factory access gate width
• ✔ Turning radius
• ✔ Floor load capacity
• ✔ Crane booked
• ✔ Forklift capacity
• ✔ Installation area cleared

Do not let truck arrive before site is ready.

Step 8️⃣ Schedule Delivery Timing Carefully

Avoid:

• ✔ Night-time arrival
• ✔ Peak traffic
• ✔ Rain or high wind
• ✔ Holiday shutdowns

Heavy equipment transport requires coordination.

Step 9️⃣ Plan Unloading Method in Advance

Confirm:

• ✔ Crane capacity
• ✔ Lifting points
• ✔ Spreader bar availability
• ✔ Rigging team
• ✔ Safety supervisor

Unloading risk is higher than transport risk.

Step 🔟 Budget for Inland Costs

Inland transport may include:

• ✔ Truck hire
• ✔ Oversize permit fees
• ✔ Escort vehicle fees
• ✔ Crane rental
• ✔ Storage fees
• ✔ Container detention penalties

In some countries, inland cost exceeds ocean freight.

Common Inland Transport Mistakes

• 1️⃣ Not checking road height limits
• 2️⃣ Undersized crane
• 3️⃣ No oversize permit
• 4️⃣ Underestimating inland distance
• 5️⃣ Not preparing site access
• 6️⃣ Not accounting for bridge restrictions
• 7️⃣ Not scheduling unloading crew

Most inland problems are preventable.

Example Inland Planning Scenario

Machine:

• 12m long base
• 18 tons
• 3.1m wide

Result:

• ✔ Low loader required
• ✔ Oversize permit required
• ✔ Escort vehicle required
• ✔ Pre-approved route required

Planning may take 3–10 days depending on country.

Risk Areas to Watch

• ✔ Port congestion
• ✔ Container demurrage
• ✔ Delayed customs release
• ✔ Traffic restrictions
• ✔ Seasonal weather
• ✔ Inexperienced transport company

Choose heavy equipment transport specialists — not general freight haulers.

Final Expert Insight

To properly plan inland transport:

• ✔ Confirm packed dimensions
• ✔ Check oversize classification
• ✔ Select correct trailer
• ✔ Plan approved route
• ✔ Confirm insurance
• ✔ Prepare factory access
• ✔ Coordinate crane & rigging
• ✔ Schedule carefully

Inland logistics is engineering and coordination — not just trucking.

The machine’s final safety depends on this stage.
