Cylinder Magnetic Piston Ring

1. Technical Definition

A cylinder magnetic piston ring, also known as a magnetic piston ring or cylinder magnet ring, is a magnetic component installed on or within the piston of a pneumatic cylinder that allows external position sensors to detect the location of the piston inside the cylinder.

The magnetic ring generates a magnetic field that passes through the cylinder barrel wall. External sensors mounted on the outside of the cylinder detect this magnetic field and determine the piston’s position.

In roll forming machines, cylinder magnetic piston rings are commonly used in systems supporting:

Pneumatic punching units
Material positioning cylinders
Automation positioning systems
Clamping actuators with position feedback
Machine safety interlock systems

They allow the control system to monitor pneumatic cylinder position without physical contact.

2. Where It Is Located

The cylinder magnetic piston ring is installed around the piston inside the pneumatic cylinder assembly.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Pneumatic actuator cylinders
Automation positioning cylinders
Punching system cylinders
Material handling actuators
Machine clamping systems

The magnetic ring is embedded within or mounted around the piston body.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Enable Position Detection

Allows external sensors to detect piston location.

3.2 Support Automation Control

Provides feedback signals for machine control systems.

3.3 Enable Non-Contact Sensing

Allows piston position detection without mechanical contact.

3.4 Improve Machine Monitoring

Helps monitor actuator movement during operation.

4. How It Works

The cylinder magnetic piston ring works by generating a detectable magnetic field.

Typical operation process:

The piston moves inside the cylinder barrel during actuator operation.

The magnetic ring mounted on the piston generates a magnetic field.

The magnetic field passes through the non-magnetic cylinder barrel.

External sensors mounted on the cylinder detect the magnetic field.

When the piston reaches the sensor location, the sensor sends a signal to the control system.

The machine control system uses this signal to confirm piston position.

This allows accurate actuator position monitoring.

5. Types of Cylinder Magnetic Piston Rings

Embedded Magnetic Ring

Integrated directly into the piston structure.

Removable Magnet Ring

Installed separately around the piston body.

Multi-Pole Magnet Ring
