Grease Cartridge

1. Technical Definition

A grease cartridge is a pre-filled cylindrical container of lubrication grease designed for use in grease guns and centralized lubrication systems.

The cartridge allows technicians to quickly reload lubrication tools without manually handling bulk grease. When installed in a grease gun or pump, the cartridge supplies grease that is delivered under pressure to machine lubrication points.

In roll forming machines, grease cartridges are commonly used to lubricate:

Roller station bearings
Pillow block bearings
Drive shaft bearings
Chain drives
Mechanical pivot joints

They provide a convenient and clean method of supplying lubrication grease.

2. Where It Is Used

Grease cartridges are used inside grease guns or automatic lubrication pumps that deliver grease to machine components.

Common usage locations in roll forming machines include:

Manual grease guns
Central lubrication pump systems
Maintenance lubrication stations
Grease distribution systems

The cartridge fits inside the grease gun barrel or pump reservoir.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Supply Lubrication Grease

Provides grease used to lubricate machine components.

3.2 Enable Clean Grease Handling

Reduces contamination compared to bulk grease handling.

3.3 Simplify Maintenance

Allows quick replacement of lubrication supply.

3.4 Support Preventive Lubrication

Ensures grease is available for regular machine maintenance.

4. How It Works

Grease cartridges supply grease to lubrication tools or systems.

Typical operation process:

The grease cartridge is inserted into a grease gun or pump.

The cartridge seal is punctured by the pump piston.

The grease gun lever or trigger is operated.

The internal pump piston pushes grease from the cartridge.

Pressurized grease travels through the hose and coupler.

Grease enters lubrication fittings on machine components.

This process allows controlled grease delivery during maintenance.

5. Types of Grease Cartridges

Standard 400g Grease Cartridge

Most common cartridge size used in grease guns.

High-Pressure Grease Cartridge

Designed for heavy-duty industrial lubrication.

Synthetic Grease Cartridge

Contains synthetic lubrication grease.

Specialty Grease Cartridge

Contains grease formulated for specific applications such as high temperature or corrosion protection.

6. Construction & Materials

Grease cartridges are designed to store grease securely and allow easy dispensing.

Common materials include:

Steel cartridge bodies
Heavy-duty plastic cartridge tubes
Rubber or plastic sealing caps
Internal grease plunger plates

Important structural components include:

Cartridge body
Grease filling material
Follower plate or piston
Sealing cap

These components allow controlled grease dispensing.

7. Lubrication System Operation

Grease cartridges support manual and automated lubrication systems.

Typical lubrication system components include:

Grease cartridge
Grease gun or pump
Grease distribution lines
Grease fittings
Machine bearings and lubrication points

The cartridge provides the grease used for lubrication.

8. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting grease cartridges.

Important considerations include:

Grease type and performance rating
Operating temperature range
Load capacity of lubricated components
Compatibility with lubrication tools
Cartridge size and capacity

Proper grease selection ensures effective lubrication.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines require frequent lubrication of bearings and moving parts. Grease cartridges allow technicians to quickly replenish grease supply during maintenance.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often require high-performance greases such as EP2 grease supplied in grease cartridges.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use standard industrial grease cartridges for routine lubrication.

12. Common Problems with Grease Cartridges

Grease cartridge performance may be affected by:

Contaminated grease
Improper cartridge installation
Air pockets inside the grease gun
Expired or degraded grease

Proper handling helps maintain lubrication quality.

13. Symptoms of Grease Supply Issues

Technicians may observe:

Grease gun not delivering grease
Air pockets in lubrication lines
Inconsistent grease flow
Grease leakage from cartridge seals

These symptoms may indicate cartridge installation issues.

14. Application Requirements

Proper use of grease cartridges includes:

Selecting the correct grease type
Installing the cartridge properly in the grease gun
Removing air from the grease gun after installation
Sealing unused cartridges to prevent contamination

Correct handling ensures reliable lubrication.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Checking grease cartridge supply levels
Replacing empty cartridges
Ensuring grease guns operate correctly
Storing cartridges in clean environments

Proper storage helps maintain grease quality.

16. Typical Cost

Grease cartridge costs vary depending on grease type and brand.

Typical price ranges include:

Standard EP2 grease cartridge
$5 – $15

High-performance synthetic grease cartridge
$15 – $40

Specialty industrial grease cartridge
$40 – $100+

Costs depend on grease formulation and supplier.

17. Safety Considerations

Improper grease cartridge use may lead to:

Contaminated lubrication systems
Insufficient grease delivery
Bearing wear and failure
Unexpected machine downtime

Proper grease handling is essential for reliable lubrication.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Grease cartridges support lubrication systems used in roll forming machines including:

Bearing lubrication systems
Drive shaft lubrication points
Chain drive lubrication systems
Mechanical pivot lubrication points
Centralized lubrication systems

They supply grease for machine maintenance and operation.

Engineering Summary

A grease cartridge is a pre-filled container of lubrication grease used in grease guns and lubrication pumps.

It:

Supplies grease for machine lubrication
Enables clean grease handling
Simplifies lubrication maintenance
Supports preventive lubrication practices
Improves machine reliability

Grease cartridges are essential supplies used in roll forming machine lubrication systems.
