Grease Metering Unit

1. Technical Definition

A grease metering unit is a lubrication system component designed to precisely measure and control the amount of grease delivered to individual lubrication points within a central lubrication system.

Metering units regulate grease flow so that each bearing, gear, chain, or sliding component receives the correct volume of lubricant during each lubrication cycle. This ensures consistent lubrication and prevents both under-lubrication and excessive grease buildup.

In roll forming machines, grease metering units are commonly used in lubrication systems supporting:

Roller station bearings
Drive chains and sprockets
Gear drives and transmission assemblies
Linear guides and sliding mechanisms
Punching and cutting components

They allow centralized lubrication systems to distribute lubricant accurately to multiple machine components.

2. Where It Is Located

Grease metering units are installed within the lubrication circuit between the distribution block and the final lubrication point.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Near roller station bearing housings
On lubrication distribution manifolds
Along lubrication lines feeding drive systems
Inside lubrication service panels
Near mechanical assemblies requiring controlled lubrication

They are typically mounted close to the lubrication point to maintain accurate grease delivery.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Measure Grease Delivery

Controls the exact quantity of grease supplied to each lubrication point.

3.2 Balance Lubrication Flow

Ensures each component receives the correct lubricant volume.

3.3 Prevent Over-Lubrication

Avoids grease buildup that could contaminate machine components.

3.4 Support Automatic Lubrication Systems

Allows centralized lubrication pumps to service multiple components efficiently.

4. How It Works

The grease metering unit uses an internal piston or valve mechanism to regulate grease flow.

Typical operation process:

Grease from the central lubrication pump enters the metering unit.

Internal pistons or chambers measure a fixed grease volume.

When pressure reaches the set level, the metered grease is released.

The lubricant flows through the outlet line to the lubrication point.

During the next lubrication cycle, the process repeats.

This ensures consistent grease delivery during each lubrication cycle.

5. Types of Grease Metering Units

Fixed Output Metering Unit

Delivers a predetermined amount of grease per cycle.

Adjustable Metering Unit

Allows technicians to adjust grease volume output.

Progressive Metering Unit

Used in progressive lubrication systems to distribute grease sequentially.

Modular Metering Unit

Allows multiple metering elements to be combined in a lubrication manifold.

6. Construction & Materials

Grease metering units are manufactured from durable materials designed for high-pressure lubrication systems.

Common materials include:

Steel metering bodies
Brass fittings
Hardened internal pistons
High-pressure sealing elements

Important structural components include:

Metering chamber
Inlet port
Outlet port
Metering piston or valve
Internal spring mechanism

These components allow precise lubricant control.

7. Lubrication Circuit Operation

Grease metering units operate within the central lubrication circuit.

Typical lubrication system components include:

Grease reservoir
Central lubrication pump
Grease distribution block
Grease metering units
Lubrication lines
Lubrication fittings
Machine bearings and moving components

The metering unit controls the final grease quantity delivered to each lubrication point.

8. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting grease metering units.

Important considerations include:

Required grease volume per lubrication point
Lubricant viscosity
Operating pressure range
Number of lubrication points
Installation location

Proper metering unit selection ensures accurate lubrication.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines require consistent lubrication to prevent excessive friction and overheating. Grease metering units help maintain stable lubrication delivery during continuous production.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often require higher-capacity metering units due to increased mechanical loads and larger lubrication requirements.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller metering units with lower grease delivery volumes.

12. Common Failure Causes

Grease metering units may fail due to:

Grease contamination
Internal piston wear
Blocked lubrication ports
Excessive lubrication pressure

Routine inspection helps prevent lubrication system failure.

13. Symptoms of Lubrication Issues

Technicians may observe:

Dry bearings or noisy machine components
Uneven lubrication distribution
Grease buildup near lubrication points
Reduced lubrication flow

These symptoms may indicate metering unit malfunction.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of grease metering units includes:

Mounting the unit near the lubrication point
Connecting the inlet and outlet lubrication lines
Ensuring correct flow direction
Testing lubricant flow during system operation

Correct installation ensures proper lubrication control.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting metering units for blockage
Checking lubrication flow during pump cycles
Cleaning grease buildup near fittings
Replacing worn or damaged units

Regular maintenance ensures consistent lubrication delivery.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Grease metering unit costs vary depending on type and capacity.

Typical price ranges include:

Standard metering unit
$25 – $80

Industrial lubrication metering unit
$80 – $200

High-precision metering device
$200 – $500+

Costs depend on pressure rating and metering accuracy.

17. Safety Considerations

A malfunctioning grease metering unit may lead to:

Insufficient lubrication of machine components
Increased mechanical wear
Overheating of bearings or gears
Unexpected machine downtime

Proper lubrication system maintenance is essential for safe operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Grease metering units support lubrication systems used in roll forming machines including:

Roller station bearings
Drive chains and sprockets
Gear drive assemblies
Linear guide systems
Punching and cutting mechanisms

They ensure controlled lubrication of critical machine components.
