Hydraulic Filter Element

1. Technical Definition

A hydraulic filter element is a replaceable filtration component installed inside a hydraulic filter housing that removes contaminants from hydraulic oil as it circulates through the system.

The filter element traps particles such as metal debris, dirt, and other contaminants that can damage hydraulic components. By maintaining clean hydraulic oil, the filter element helps ensure reliable system performance and extends the life of pumps, valves, and actuators.

In roll forming machines, hydraulic filter elements are used in hydraulic systems that power:

• Hydraulic flying cutoff systems
• Hydraulic punching units
• Hydraulic pressing systems
• Hydraulic actuators
• Hydraulic power units (HPUs)

They are critical maintenance components that maintain hydraulic oil cleanliness.

2. Where It Is Located

The hydraulic filter element is installed inside a hydraulic filter housing within the hydraulic oil circuit.

Common installation locations include:

• Hydraulic power unit filter assemblies
• Return line filtration systems
• Pressure line filtration systems
• Suction line filtration systems
• Standalone hydraulic filtration units

The filter element is positioned so that hydraulic oil must pass through the filtration media before continuing through the system.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Remove Contaminants

The filter element captures dirt, metal particles, and debris from hydraulic oil.

3.2 Protect Hydraulic Components

Clean oil prevents wear and damage to pumps, valves, and actuators.

3.3 Maintain System Efficiency

Reduces internal wear and improves hydraulic performance.

3.4 Support Long Equipment Life

Clean oil helps extend the service life of hydraulic systems.

4. How It Works

The hydraulic filter element operates as a filtration barrier inside the hydraulic oil flow path.

Typical operation process:

Hydraulic oil enters the filter housing.

Oil is directed through the filter element.

Contaminants are trapped within the filter media.

Clean oil exits the filter element and continues circulating through the hydraulic system.

As the filter collects contaminants, filtration efficiency improves until the element eventually becomes clogged and requires replacement.

5. Types of Hydraulic Filter Elements

Paper Filter Element

Uses treated cellulose filter media for general filtration.

Microglass Filter Element

Uses fine fiberglass media for high-efficiency filtration.

Wire Mesh Filter Element

Used for coarse filtration and reusable applications.

Synthetic Fiber Filter Element

Provides high dirt-holding capacity and long service life.

6. Construction & Materials

Hydraulic filter elements are manufactured from filtration materials designed to capture contaminants while allowing oil flow.

Common materials include:

• Cellulose filter media
• Microglass filtration fibers
• Synthetic filtration fabrics
• Steel or plastic support cores
• Steel end caps

Important structural components include:

• Filtration media layers
• Inner support core
• Outer protective mesh
• End caps and sealing gaskets

These components ensure efficient filtration and structural stability.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting hydraulic filter elements.

Important considerations include:

• Micron filtration rating
• Oil flow capacity
• Dirt-holding capacity
• Pressure resistance
• Compatibility with hydraulic oil

Proper filter selection ensures effective contamination control.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Hydraulic filter elements must withstand:

• Continuous oil flow
• Hydraulic pressure differentials
• Thermal expansion from heated oil
• Contaminant buildup over time

Industrial filter elements are designed to maintain structural integrity under these conditions.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines rely on stable hydraulic systems. Effective filtration helps prevent contamination that could interrupt production.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often require high-capacity hydraulic filters capable of handling large oil volumes and heavy contaminant loads.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller hydraulic systems with compact filter elements designed for moderate oil flow rates.

12. Common Failure Causes

Hydraulic filter elements may fail due to:

• Excessive contamination buildup
• Hydraulic pressure spikes
• Improper filter selection
• Extended service intervals
• Physical damage during installation

Regular filter replacement prevents filtration problems.

13. Symptoms of Filter Element Issues

Technicians may observe:

• Reduced hydraulic system performance
• High differential pressure across the filter
• Hydraulic alarms or warnings
• Dirty hydraulic oil

These symptoms may indicate a clogged filter element.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of hydraulic filter elements includes:

• Opening the filter housing
• Removing the used filter element
• Installing the new element correctly
• Replacing sealing gaskets if necessary
• Securing the housing cover

Correct installation ensures effective filtration.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

• Replacing filter elements at recommended intervals
• Monitoring hydraulic oil cleanliness
• Checking differential pressure indicators
• Inspecting filter housings during maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures clean hydraulic oil.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Hydraulic filter element costs vary depending on size and filtration quality.

Typical price ranges include:

Small hydraulic filter element
$10 – $50

Industrial hydraulic filter element
$50 – $200

High-performance filtration element
$200 – $600+

Costs depend on filtration media and capacity.

17. Safety Considerations

A clogged or damaged filter element may lead to:

• Reduced hydraulic flow
• Hydraulic pressure loss
• Contaminated hydraulic systems
• Premature wear of hydraulic components

Maintaining proper filtration helps ensure safe hydraulic operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Hydraulic filter elements support hydraulic systems used in roll forming machines including:

• Hydraulic power units
• Hydraulic cutting systems
• Punch press hydraulics
• Hydraulic actuator systems
• Hydraulic pressure control circuits

They ensure hydraulic oil remains clean and free of harmful contaminants.
