Flow Sensor

1. Technical Definition

A hydraulic flow sensor is an electronic sensing device used to detect and measure the flow rate of hydraulic fluid moving through a hydraulic circuit. It converts the movement of hydraulic oil into an electrical signal that can be monitored by the machine control system.

Flow sensors provide real-time feedback about fluid movement, allowing the machine’s PLC or control system to monitor hydraulic performance, detect abnormal flow conditions, and ensure that hydraulic components are operating correctly.

In roll forming machines, hydraulic flow sensors are commonly used in systems controlling:

Hydraulic flying cutoff systems
Hydraulic punching units
Hydraulic press mechanisms
Hydraulic actuator systems
Hydraulic power units (HPUs)

They are important monitoring devices used in automated hydraulic control systems.

2. Where It Is Located

Hydraulic flow sensors are installed inline within hydraulic pipes or hoses where flow monitoring is required.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Hydraulic pump output lines
Hydraulic supply lines to valves
Hydraulic return lines
Hydraulic actuator circuits
Hydraulic diagnostic monitoring points

They are typically installed in accessible areas for monitoring and maintenance.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Measure Hydraulic Fluid Flow

Detects the rate at which hydraulic oil moves through the system.

3.2 Provide Real-Time System Feedback

Sends flow data to the PLC or machine controller.

3.3 Detect Abnormal Flow Conditions

Identifies blockages, pump issues, or leaks.

3.4 Support Automated Hydraulic Control

Allows the control system to monitor hydraulic circuit performance.

4. How It Works

Hydraulic flow sensors detect fluid movement and convert it into electrical signals.

Typical operation process:

Hydraulic oil flows through the sensor body.

The sensor detects the fluid movement using internal sensing elements.

The movement generates an electrical signal proportional to the flow rate.

The signal is transmitted to the PLC or control system.

The control system interprets the signal and displays flow information.

The system can trigger alarms if flow conditions fall outside normal ranges.

This allows continuous monitoring of hydraulic system performance.
