Oil Catch Tray | Roll Forming Machine Oil Containment Tray

Oil Catch Tray

1. Technical Definition

An oil catch tray is a protective containment tray installed beneath machinery components to collect excess oil, grease, or lubricant that may leak, drip, or overflow during machine operation or maintenance.

The tray prevents oil from spreading across machine structures or factory floors, helping maintain a clean working environment while reducing the risk of slips, contamination, or environmental hazards.

In roll forming machines, oil catch trays are commonly used beneath systems such as:

Hydraulic power units
Gearboxes
Lubrication systems
Oil pumps
Hydraulic fittings and valves

They serve as a secondary containment measure for industrial fluids.

2. Where It Is Located

Oil catch trays are installed beneath machinery components that may release oil or lubrication fluid.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Under hydraulic power units
Below gearbox assemblies
Beneath lubrication pumps
Under hydraulic manifolds
Below oil reservoirs and tanks

They are typically mounted directly to the machine frame or positioned underneath the equipment.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Collect Oil Leaks

Captures oil that drips or leaks from machine components.

3.2 Prevent Floor Contamination

Stops oil from spreading across the factory floor.

3.3 Improve Workplace Safety

Reduces slip hazards caused by oil spills.

3.4 Support Environmental Protection

Helps contain lubricants and hydraulic fluids.

4. How It Works

The oil catch tray acts as a containment basin for leaking fluids.

Typical operation process:

Oil leaks or drips from a machine component.

The oil falls into the catch tray.

The tray holds the oil safely within its containment area.

Technicians periodically empty or clean the tray.

The collected oil can be disposed of or recycled.

This prevents oil contamination in the workspace.

5. Types of Oil Catch Trays

Fixed Machine-Mounted Tray

Permanently mounted beneath machine components.

Removable Catch Tray

Can be removed for cleaning and maintenance.

Large Containment Pan

Used under hydraulic power units or large oil reservoirs.

Drainable Catch Tray

Includes a drain port for easy oil removal.

6. Construction & Materials

Oil catch trays are designed to resist oil, corrosion, and industrial wear.

Common materials include:

Steel trays with protective coatings
Stainless steel trays
Heavy-duty plastic trays
Aluminum containment trays

Important structural components include:

Containment basin
Raised edges or side walls
Mounting brackets or supports
Drain ports (in some designs)

These features ensure reliable oil containment.

7. Machine Operation Integration

Oil catch trays support lubrication and hydraulic systems by containing leaks.

Typical systems that may use catch trays include:

Hydraulic systems
Gearbox lubrication systems
Central lubrication pumps
Oil distribution systems
Hydraulic manifolds

The tray collects excess fluids from these systems.

8. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when designing oil catch trays.

Important considerations include:

Fluid containment capacity
Chemical compatibility with oils
Mounting location and accessibility
Ease of cleaning
Structural durability

Proper tray design ensures effective fluid containment.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines operate continuously and use multiple lubrication systems. Oil catch trays help manage small oil leaks that may occur during extended operation.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often use larger hydraulic systems and gearboxes, which may require larger oil containment trays.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller lubrication systems with compact oil catch trays.

12. Common Problems with Oil Catch Trays

Oil catch trays may experience issues such as:

Overflow due to lack of cleaning
Corrosion from prolonged oil exposure
Improper installation
Physical damage from machine vibration

Regular inspection helps maintain proper containment.

13. Symptoms of Catch Tray Issues

Technicians may observe:

Oil spilling outside the tray
Damaged or bent tray edges
Oil accumulation on machine floors
Loose or unstable tray mounting

These symptoms may indicate tray maintenance is required.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of oil catch trays includes:

Positioning the tray directly beneath oil sources
Securing the tray to the machine frame
Ensuring adequate containment capacity
Providing access for cleaning and maintenance

Correct installation ensures effective oil containment.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Emptying collected oil from the tray
Cleaning oil residue from the tray surface
Inspecting tray mounts and brackets
Checking for corrosion or damage

Regular maintenance helps maintain a clean work environment.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Oil catch tray costs vary depending on size and material.

Typical price ranges include:

Small oil catch tray
$20 – $80

Industrial machine containment tray
$80 – $250

Large hydraulic containment pan
$250 – $800+

Costs depend on tray size and construction.

17. Safety Considerations

Improper oil containment may lead to:

Slippery factory floors
Environmental contamination
Machine lubrication system leaks going unnoticed
Increased workplace hazards

Oil containment systems improve workplace safety.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Oil catch trays support lubrication and hydraulic systems used in roll forming machines including:

Hydraulic power units
Gearbox lubrication systems
Oil pumps and reservoirs
Central lubrication systems
Hydraulic manifolds

They collect and contain oil leaks during operation.

Engineering Summary

The oil catch tray is a containment device used to collect oil leaks and lubricant drips from machine components.

It:

Collects leaking oil and lubricant
Prevents floor contamination
Improves workplace safety
Supports environmental protection
Helps maintain clean machine operation

Oil catch trays are commonly used beneath hydraulic and lubrication systems in roll forming machines.
