Oil Cooler Thermostat | Roll Forming Machine Lubrication Temperature Control

Oil Cooler Thermostat

1. Technical Definition

An oil cooler thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve used in lubrication systems to regulate the flow of lubrication oil through an oil cooler radiator based on oil temperature.

The thermostat ensures that oil is cooled only when necessary. When oil temperature rises above the set threshold, the thermostat opens and directs oil through the cooling radiator. When oil temperature is low, the thermostat bypasses the cooler to maintain proper oil viscosity.

In roll forming machines, oil cooler thermostats are commonly used in systems supporting:

Gearbox lubrication systems
Drive system lubrication circuits
Central oil lubrication units
High-speed mechanical assemblies
Heavy-duty industrial drive systems

They help maintain stable oil operating temperatures.

2. Where It Is Located

Oil cooler thermostats are installed within the lubrication circuit between the oil pump and oil cooler radiator.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Gearbox lubrication circuits
Central lubrication cooling systems
Drive system oil circulation lines
Hydraulic lubrication units
Machine lubrication cooling assemblies

They are typically installed near the oil cooler or lubrication pump.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Control Oil Cooling

Regulates when oil is routed through the oil cooler.

3.2 Maintain Optimal Oil Temperature

Keeps lubrication oil within the correct temperature range.

3.3 Improve Lubrication Efficiency

Ensures oil reaches proper operating viscosity.

3.4 Protect Mechanical Components

Prevents overheating or excessive cooling of lubrication oil.

4. How It Works

The oil cooler thermostat operates using a temperature-sensitive internal element.

Typical operation process:

Lubrication oil circulates through the lubrication system.

The thermostat monitors oil temperature.

If oil temperature is below the thermostat set point, oil bypasses the cooler.

When oil temperature rises above the set point, the thermostat valve opens.

Oil flows through the oil cooler radiator where heat is removed.

Cooled oil returns to the lubrication system.

This cycle maintains stable lubrication oil temperature.

5. Types of Oil Cooler Thermostats

Wax Element Thermostat

Uses a wax-filled element that expands with temperature.
