Oil Filter Housing

1. Technical Definition

An oil filter housing is a structural enclosure that holds and protects the oil filter element within a lubrication system, allowing oil to pass through the filter so contaminants can be removed.

The housing directs oil flow through the filter element while maintaining system pressure and preventing leaks. It ensures the filtration process works effectively by securely positioning the filter and sealing the lubrication circuit.

In roll forming machines, oil filter housings are commonly used in systems supporting:

Gearbox lubrication systems
Central lubrication circuits
Drive system oil circulation
Hydraulic lubrication systems
Mechanical transmission assemblies

They are essential components in lubrication filtration systems.

2. Where It Is Located

Oil filter housings are installed in lubrication lines where oil filtration occurs before oil is distributed to machine components.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Between the oil pump and lubrication distribution system
Inside central lubrication units
Gearbox lubrication return lines
Hydraulic power unit filtration systems
Machine lubrication service panels

They are typically positioned where oil can be easily serviced and filtered.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Hold the Oil Filter Element

Provides structural support for the filter cartridge or element.

3.2 Direct Oil Through the Filter

Ensures oil flows through the filtration media.

3.3 Maintain System Sealing

Prevents oil leaks during filtration.

3.4 Support Maintenance Access

Allows technicians to replace filter elements easily.

4. How It Works

The oil filter housing directs oil through the filter element to remove contaminants.

Typical operation process:

Lubrication oil enters the housing through the inlet port.

Oil flows into the internal filter element.

The filter media captures contaminants such as metal particles and debris.

Clean oil exits the housing through the outlet port.

Filtered oil continues circulating through the lubrication system.

The filter element is periodically replaced to maintain filtration efficiency.

5. Types of Oil Filter Housings

Spin-On Filter Housing

Designed for disposable spin-on filter cartridges.

Cartridge Filter Housing

Holds replaceable internal filter elements.

Inline Filter Housing

Installed directly in lubrication pipelines.

High-Pressure Filter Housing

Designed for high-pressure lubrication systems.

6. Construction & Materials

Oil filter housings are manufactured from materials designed to withstand oil pressure and industrial environments.

Common materials include:

Aluminum housings
Cast iron housings
Steel filter bodies
Stainless steel components
Oil-resistant sealing gaskets

Important structural components include:

Filter housing body
Filter element chamber
Inlet and outlet ports
Housing cap or cover
Sealing O-rings or gaskets

These components ensure proper filtration and leak-free operation.

7. Lubrication Circuit Operation

Oil filter housings operate within machine lubrication circuits.

Typical lubrication system components include:

Oil reservoir
Oil pump
Oil filter housing
Oil filter element
Oil distribution manifold
Lubrication lines
Machine bearings and gears

The housing directs oil through the filter before it reaches machine components.

8. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting oil filter housings.

Important considerations include:

Oil flow rate capacity
Operating pressure rating
Filter element compatibility
Ease of maintenance access
Seal reliability

Proper housing selection ensures effective filtration.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines generate significant metal particles and contaminants. Oil filter housings ensure filtration systems can remove these contaminants during continuous operation.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often require larger filtration systems and higher-capacity oil filter housings.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use compact oil filter housings due to lower lubrication flow requirements.

12. Common Failure Causes

Oil filter housings may fail due to:

Seal deterioration
Improper installation
Thread damage
Corrosion or mechanical damage

Routine inspection helps prevent filtration system failures.

13. Symptoms of Housing Issues

Technicians may observe:

Oil leaks around the housing
Difficulty removing the housing cap
Reduced oil flow through the filter
Damaged sealing surfaces

These symptoms may indicate oil filter housing problems.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of oil filter housings includes:

Mounting the housing securely to the machine frame
Connecting inlet and outlet lubrication lines
Installing the correct filter element
Ensuring proper sealing with O-rings or gaskets

Correct installation ensures proper filtration performance.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Replacing filter elements at scheduled intervals
Inspecting housing seals for leaks
Cleaning contamination from the housing interior
Checking oil flow through the filter

Regular maintenance ensures effective lubrication filtration.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Oil filter housing costs vary depending on size and pressure rating.

Typical price ranges include:

Small lubrication filter housing
$50 – $200

Industrial oil filter housing
$200 – $600

Heavy-duty filtration housing
$600 – $1500+

Costs depend on capacity and materials.

17. Safety Considerations

A malfunctioning oil filter housing may lead to:

Oil leakage
Loss of lubrication pressure
Contamination entering the lubrication system
Mechanical wear of machine components

Maintaining proper filtration is critical for machine reliability.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Oil filter housings support lubrication systems used in roll forming machines including:

Gearbox lubrication systems
Drive chain lubrication circuits
Bearing lubrication systems
Central lubrication units
Mechanical transmission assemblies

They protect machine components by filtering contaminants from lubrication oil.

Engineering Summary

The oil filter housing is an enclosure that holds the oil filter element within a machine lubrication system.

It:

Supports the oil filter element
Directs oil through the filtration system
Prevents contamination in lubrication circuits
Maintains lubrication system pressure
Improves machine reliability and service life

Oil filter housings are critical components in roll forming machine lubrication filtration systems.
