Oil Pressure Switch

1. Technical Definition

An oil pressure switch is an electrical monitoring device used to detect and respond to lubrication oil pressure levels within a machine’s lubrication system.

The switch monitors oil pressure in lubrication circuits and activates an electrical signal when pressure reaches a preset threshold. This signal may trigger alarms, indicator lights, or automatic machine shutdowns to protect mechanical components.

In roll forming machines, oil pressure switches are commonly used in systems supporting:

Gearbox lubrication systems
Central lubrication oil pumps
Drive system lubrication circuits
Hydraulic lubrication systems
Mechanical transmission assemblies

They are critical safety devices for monitoring lubrication system performance.

2. Where It Is Located

Oil pressure switches are installed in lubrication lines or lubrication manifolds where oil pressure must be monitored.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Lubrication pump outlet lines
Gearbox lubrication circuits
Central lubrication manifolds
Drive system lubrication pipelines
Hydraulic lubrication assemblies

They are typically positioned where oil pressure readings represent system performance.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Monitor Lubrication Pressure

Detects the oil pressure level in the lubrication system.

3.2 Trigger Safety Alarms

Activates alarms when oil pressure falls below safe levels.

3.3 Protect Machine Components

Prevents operation without proper lubrication.

3.4 Support Machine Control Systems

Provides pressure signals to PLC or control panels.

4. How It Works

The oil pressure switch operates by detecting hydraulic pressure within the lubrication system.

Typical operation process:

Lubrication oil flows through the lubrication circuit.

The oil pressure acts on a sensing diaphragm or piston inside the switch.

When pressure exceeds the preset threshold, the switch activates.

The internal electrical contacts change state.

A signal is sent to the machine control system or alarm circuit.

If pressure drops below the threshold, the switch returns to its original state.

This allows the machine to monitor lubrication pressure continuously.

5. Types of Oil Pressure Switches

Mechanical Pressure Switch

Uses a spring-loaded diaphragm or piston to detect pressure.

Adjustable Pressure Switch

Allows technicians to set custom pressure activation levels.

Electronic Pressure Switch

Uses electronic sensors and digital outputs.

Differential Pressure Switch

Monitors pressure difference across filters or lubrication circuits.

6. Construction & Materials

Oil pressure switches are manufactured from materials designed for durability in lubrication systems.

Common materials include:

Stainless steel pressure housings
Brass or aluminum bodies
Oil-resistant diaphragms
Industrial electrical connectors

Important structural components include:

Pressure sensing diaphragm or piston
Electrical contact assembly
Adjustment spring mechanism
Pressure inlet port
Electrical terminal connector

These components allow accurate pressure detection.

7. Lubrication Circuit Operation

Oil pressure switches operate within machine lubrication circuits.

Typical lubrication system components include:

Oil reservoir
Oil pump
Oil filter
Oil pressure switch
Oil distribution manifold
Lubrication lines
Machine bearings and gears

The switch monitors pressure generated by the oil pump.

8. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting oil pressure switches.

Important considerations include:

Operating pressure range
Electrical signal compatibility
Response time
Pressure port size
Environmental durability

Proper switch selection ensures reliable pressure monitoring.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines depend on continuous lubrication pressure. Oil pressure switches ensure that the machine operates only when lubrication pressure is within safe limits.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often operate with higher lubrication pressures and may require higher-rated pressure switches.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use lower-pressure lubrication systems and compact pressure switches.

12. Common Failure Causes

Oil pressure switches may fail due to:

Internal diaphragm wear
Oil contamination entering the switch
Electrical contact failure
Improper pressure adjustment

Routine inspection helps maintain reliable pressure monitoring.

13. Symptoms of Switch Issues

Technicians may observe:

False low-pressure alarms
No pressure alarm despite low lubrication pressure
Erratic electrical signals
Machine shutdowns due to pressure faults

These symptoms may indicate oil pressure switch malfunction.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of oil pressure switches includes:

Mounting the switch in the lubrication pressure line
Ensuring proper thread sealing
Connecting electrical wiring to the control system
Setting the correct pressure threshold

Correct installation ensures accurate pressure monitoring.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting electrical connections
Checking pressure switch calibration
Verifying lubrication pressure readings
Replacing worn pressure switches if necessary

Regular inspection ensures reliable lubrication safety monitoring.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Oil pressure switch costs vary depending on type and pressure rating.

Typical price ranges include:

Basic mechanical pressure switch
$40 – $150

Industrial adjustable pressure switch
$150 – $400

Electronic pressure switch
$400 – $900+

Costs depend on sensor accuracy and construction.

17. Safety Considerations

A malfunctioning oil pressure switch may lead to:

Undetected loss of lubrication pressure
Machine damage due to insufficient lubrication
Unexpected machine shutdowns
Mechanical failure of gears or bearings

Maintaining proper pressure monitoring is essential for machine safety.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Oil pressure switches support lubrication systems used in roll forming machines including:

Gearbox lubrication systems
Drive chain lubrication circuits
Bearing lubrication systems
Central lubrication units
Mechanical transmission assemblies

They provide safety monitoring for lubrication system pressure.
