Oil Temperature Switch

1. Technical Definition

An oil temperature switch is a temperature monitoring device used to detect when hydraulic oil reaches a predefined temperature threshold. When the oil temperature rises above or falls below the preset limit, the switch activates an electrical signal that alerts the machine control system.

Unlike temperature sensors that provide continuous readings, a temperature switch functions as a safety device that triggers alarms, warnings, or protective actions when critical temperature limits are reached.

In roll forming machines, oil temperature switches are commonly used in hydraulic systems supporting:

Hydraulic flying cutoff systems
Hydraulic punching units
Hydraulic press mechanisms
Hydraulic actuator systems
Hydraulic power units (HPUs)

They help prevent hydraulic system damage caused by overheating.

2. Where It Is Located

Oil temperature switches are installed in locations where hydraulic oil temperature can be accurately monitored.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Hydraulic reservoir tanks
Hydraulic return lines
Hydraulic oil cooler circuits
Hydraulic manifold blocks
Hydraulic pump assemblies

They are typically installed where oil temperature represents overall system conditions.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Monitor Oil Temperature Limits

Detects when oil temperature exceeds safe operating limits.

3.2 Trigger Safety Alerts

Sends a signal to the PLC or alarm system.

3.3 Protect Hydraulic Components

Prevents overheating damage to pumps, valves, and seals.

3.4 Support Automatic System Shutdown

Allows the control system to stop the machine if overheating occurs.

4. How It Works

The oil temperature switch monitors the hydraulic fluid temperature and activates when the preset limit is reached.

Typical operation process:

Hydraulic oil circulates through the hydraulic system.

The oil temperature switch senses the oil temperature through a probe or internal sensing element.

When the temperature reaches the preset threshold, the switch activates.

An electrical signal is sent to the PLC or control system.

The control system triggers an alarm or protective action.

When the temperature returns to normal levels, the switch resets.

This protects the hydraulic system from overheating.

5. Types of Oil Temperature Switches

Mechanical Temperature Switch

Uses a thermal expansion element to trigger switching.

Bimetal Temperature Switch

Uses a bimetal strip that bends when heated.

Electronic Temperature Switch

Uses electronic sensing components for precise switching.

Adjustable Temperature Switch

Allows technicians to set the switching temperature.

6. Construction & Materials

Oil temperature switches are built from materials designed to withstand hydraulic oil exposure and industrial conditions.

Common materials include:

Stainless steel sensor probes
Brass or steel threaded housings
High-temperature sealing components
Industrial electrical connectors

Important structural characteristics include:

Oil-resistant sensor probe
Threaded mounting connection
Electrical switching contacts
Protective housing

These features ensure reliable operation.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting oil temperature switches.

Important considerations include:

Operating temperature range
Switch activation temperature
Hydraulic pressure rating

Installation location

Proper switch selection ensures effective temperature monitoring.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Oil temperature switches must withstand:

Hydraulic oil pressure
Continuous oil exposure
Machine vibration
Thermal expansion and contraction

Industrial switches are designed for long-term durability.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines generate significant hydraulic heat. Temperature switches help ensure the hydraulic system operates within safe limits.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often require high-capacity hydraulic systems that generate higher heat levels, making temperature monitoring critical.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically generate less hydraulic heat but still require temperature protection.

12. Common Failure Causes

Oil temperature switches may fail due to:

Sensor probe damage
Electrical contact wear
Hydraulic contamination
Incorrect installation

Routine inspection helps maintain reliable temperature protection.

13. Symptoms of Temperature Switch Issues

Technicians may observe:

False temperature alarms
Failure to trigger overheating alerts
PLC temperature fault messages
Irregular hydraulic temperature control

These symptoms may indicate switch malfunction.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of oil temperature switches includes:

Installing the switch in the correct hydraulic circuit location
Ensuring proper thread sealing
Connecting electrical wiring to the control system
Verifying correct switch activation settings

Correct installation ensures reliable temperature monitoring.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting electrical connections
Checking switch activation operation
Maintaining clean hydraulic fluid
Replacing faulty switches when necessary

Regular maintenance helps maintain system protection.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Oil temperature switch costs vary depending on design and accuracy.

Typical price ranges include:

Basic oil temperature switch
$40 – $120

Industrial hydraulic temperature switch
$120 – $350

High-precision electronic switch
