Pneumatic Clevis Pin

1. Technical Definition

A pneumatic clevis pin is a cylindrical fastening component used to connect a pneumatic cylinder clevis mount to a machine bracket or linkage while allowing pivoting movement.

The clevis pin passes through the aligned holes of the clevis mount and the machine mounting bracket, forming a pivot joint that allows the pneumatic cylinder to move slightly during operation. This prevents excessive side loading on the cylinder and supports smooth actuator motion.

In roll forming machines, pneumatic clevis pins are commonly used in systems supporting:

Pneumatic punching units
Material clamping systems
Automation positioning cylinders
Air-powered pressing mechanisms
Pneumatic lifting and pushing actuators

They are essential components in pneumatic cylinder mounting assemblies.

2. Where It Is Located

The pneumatic clevis pin is installed through the clevis mount and machine bracket that secure a pneumatic cylinder to the machine frame.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Pneumatic cylinder rear clevis mounts
Rod-end clevis connections
Punching system cylinder mounts
Material positioning actuator mounts
Automation pneumatic assemblies

The clevis pin forms the pivot connection between the cylinder and the machine structure.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Secure Cylinder Mounting

Connects the clevis mount to the machine structure.

3.2 Allow Pivot Movement

Enables the cylinder to rotate slightly during operation.

3.3 Reduce Mechanical Stress

Prevents side loads from damaging the cylinder.

3.4 Maintain Actuator Alignment

Supports proper cylinder positioning during movement.

4. How It Works

The pneumatic clevis pin functions as a pivot shaft between the clevis mount and machine bracket.

Typical operation process:

The clevis mount on the cylinder is aligned with the machine bracket.

The clevis pin is inserted through the aligned mounting holes.

A retaining clip, cotter pin, or locking device secures the pin.

As the pneumatic cylinder operates, the clevis pin allows the cylinder to pivot.

This pivot movement accommodates slight alignment changes during piston rod movement.

The pin maintains secure attachment while allowing controlled rotation.

5. Types of Pneumatic Clevis Pins

Standard Clevis Pin

Basic cylindrical pin used with retaining clips.

Shoulder Clevis Pin

Includes a shoulder for improved alignment.

Locking Clevis Pin

Uses locking mechanisms to prevent movement.

Heavy-Duty Clevis Pin

Designed for high-load pneumatic cylinders.

6. Construction & Materials

Pneumatic clevis pins are manufactured from durable materials designed to withstand mechanical loads and repeated movement.

Common materials include:

Hardened carbon steel
Stainless steel
Alloy steel
Zinc-plated steel

Important structural characteristics include:

Precision-machined diameter
Smooth pivoting surface
Retaining hole for cotter pins
High load-bearing strength

These features ensure reliable pivot operation.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting clevis pins.

Important considerations include:

Pin diameter
Load capacity
Material strength
Corrosion resistance
Compatibility with clevis mounts

Proper pin selection ensures safe cylinder mounting.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Pneumatic clevis pins must withstand:

Mechanical loads from actuator movement
Repeated pivoting motion
Machine vibration
Shock loads during operation

Industrial clevis pins are designed for long service life.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines use pneumatic cylinders that cycle frequently. Clevis pins must maintain smooth pivot movement while handling repetitive mechanical loads.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines may use reinforced clevis pins designed to handle larger actuator forces.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller pneumatic cylinders with standard clevis pins.

12. Common Failure Causes

Pneumatic clevis pins may fail due to:

Excessive mechanical load
Wear from repeated pivot movement
Improper lubrication
Corrosion or surface damage

Routine inspection helps prevent clevis pin failure.

13. Symptoms of Clevis Pin Issues

Technicians may observe:

Loose cylinder mounting
Excessive pivot movement
Visible pin wear
Noise or vibration during cylinder operation

These symptoms may indicate clevis pin wear or damage.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of pneumatic clevis pins includes:

Aligning the clevis mount and machine bracket
Inserting the pin through the mounting holes
Installing a retaining clip or cotter pin
Verifying secure attachment

Correct installation ensures reliable cylinder mounting.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting clevis pins for wear
Checking retaining clips or cotter pins
Ensuring proper lubrication when required
Replacing worn pins during servicing

Regular maintenance ensures reliable actuator mounting.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Pneumatic clevis pin costs vary depending on size and material.

Typical price ranges include:

Small clevis pin
$3 – $15

Industrial clevis pin
$15 – $60

Heavy-duty clevis pin
$60 – $150+

Costs depend on pin size and load rating.

17. Safety Considerations

A damaged clevis pin may lead to:

Cylinder misalignment
Loose actuator mounting
Unexpected actuator movement
Mechanical failure of the mounting system

Proper pin maintenance ensures safe actuator operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Pneumatic clevis pins support pneumatic systems used in roll forming machines including:

Pneumatic punching systems
Air-operated clamping mechanisms
Material positioning systems
Automation control systems
Compressed air actuator systems

They form the pivot connection between the pneumatic cylinder and machine frame.
