Pneumatic Trunnion Mount

1. Technical Definition

A pneumatic trunnion mount is a mechanical mounting system used to support a pneumatic cylinder while allowing it to pivot around a fixed axis during operation.

The trunnion mount typically consists of two cylindrical trunnion pins or journals attached to the sides of the cylinder body. These pins are supported by brackets or bearings mounted to the machine frame, allowing the cylinder to rotate slightly as the piston rod extends and retracts.

In roll forming machines, pneumatic trunnion mounts are commonly used in systems supporting:

Pneumatic punching units
Material positioning systems
Automation actuator assemblies
Air-powered pressing mechanisms
Industrial pneumatic cylinders requiring pivot motion

They provide stable yet flexible mounting for pneumatic actuators.

2. Where It Is Located

The pneumatic trunnion mount is installed on the sides of the pneumatic cylinder body, usually near the center or rear of the cylinder.

Common installation locations in roll forming machines include:

Pneumatic actuator mounting assemblies
Punching system cylinders
Material handling cylinders
Automation positioning actuators
Industrial pneumatic cylinder supports

The trunnion pins are supported by mounting brackets attached to the machine structure.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Support Cylinder Mounting

Provides structural support for the pneumatic cylinder.

3.2 Allow Pivoting Movement

Allows the cylinder to rotate around the trunnion axis.

3.3 Reduce Side Loading

Helps prevent misalignment forces from damaging the cylinder.

3.4 Maintain Mechanical Alignment

Ensures proper positioning during actuator movement.

4. How It Works

The pneumatic trunnion mount allows the cylinder to rotate around a fixed pivot axis.

Typical operation process:

The cylinder body includes trunnion pins on each side.

These pins are installed into mounting brackets on the machine frame.

The trunnion pins act as pivot shafts.

As the piston rod extends or retracts, the cylinder rotates slightly around the trunnion axis.

This movement accommodates alignment changes during actuator operation.

The pivoting action reduces side loads on the cylinder.

5. Types of Pneumatic Trunnion Mounts

Center Trunnion Mount

Trunnion pins located near the center of the cylinder body.

Rear Trunnion Mount

Pins located closer to the cylinder end cap.

Adjustable Trunnion Mount

Allows alignment adjustment during installation.

Heavy-Duty Trunnion Mount

Designed for high-load pneumatic cylinders.

6. Construction & Materials

Pneumatic trunnion mounts are manufactured from durable materials capable of supporting actuator loads.

Common materials include:

Carbon steel
Alloy steel
Stainless steel
Hardened steel pins

Important structural characteristics include:

High load-bearing capacity
Precision-machined pivot pins
Corrosion-resistant surface coatings
Heavy-duty mounting brackets

These features ensure reliable cylinder support.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting trunnion mounts.

Important considerations include:

Cylinder bore size
Load capacity requirements
Mounting position on the cylinder
Pin diameter and strength
Alignment with machine structure

Proper mount selection ensures stable actuator operation.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Pneumatic trunnion mounts must withstand:

Mechanical loads from cylinder operation
Repeated pivot movement
Machine vibration
Shock loads during operation

Industrial mounts are designed for long service life.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines use pneumatic cylinders that cycle frequently. Trunnion mounts must maintain secure mounting while allowing smooth pivot motion.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines may use reinforced trunnion mounts capable of handling larger pneumatic actuator forces.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller cylinders with compact trunnion mounts.

12. Common Failure Causes

Pneumatic trunnion mounts may fail due to:

Excessive side loading
Pin wear or fatigue
Improper installation alignment
Mechanical impact damage

Routine inspection helps prevent mount failure.

13. Symptoms of Trunnion Mount Issues

Technicians may observe:

Loose cylinder mounting
Excessive pivot movement
Worn trunnion pins
Misalignment during cylinder operation

These symptoms may indicate trunnion mount wear.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of pneumatic trunnion mounts includes:

Aligning trunnion pins with machine mounting brackets
Securing brackets to the machine frame
Ensuring proper pivot clearance
Testing cylinder movement after installation

Correct installation ensures stable actuator mounting.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting trunnion pins for wear
Checking mounting brackets for damage
Ensuring proper lubrication when required
Verifying secure mounting hardware

Regular maintenance ensures reliable cylinder support.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Pneumatic trunnion mount costs vary depending on cylinder size and load capacity.

Typical price ranges include:

Small trunnion mount
$40 – $120

Industrial trunnion mount
$120 – $400

Heavy-duty trunnion mount
$400 – $1,000+

Costs depend on mount size and material construction.

17. Safety Considerations

A damaged trunnion mount may lead to:

Cylinder misalignment
Loose actuator mounting
Unexpected actuator movement
Mechanical failure of the mounting system

Proper mount maintenance ensures safe pneumatic operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Pneumatic trunnion mounts support pneumatic systems used in roll forming machines including:

Pneumatic punching systems
Air-operated clamping mechanisms
Material positioning systems
Automation control systems
Compressed air actuator systems

They support and stabilize pneumatic cylinders while allowing pivot movement.
