Reservoir Baffle Plate | Roll Forming Machine Hydraulic Tank

Reservoir Baffle Plate

1. Technical Definition

A reservoir baffle plate is an internal divider installed inside a hydraulic reservoir tank to control the movement of hydraulic oil as it circulates through the system.

The baffle plate separates the return oil area from the pump suction area, forcing oil to travel a longer path through the tank before being recirculated by the pump.

This controlled flow improves oil cooling, air separation, and contaminant settling within the hydraulic reservoir.

In roll forming machines, reservoir baffle plates are essential for maintaining stable hydraulic fluid conditions for systems such as:

• Hydraulic flying cutoff systems

• Punch press hydraulics

• Hydraulic pressing systems

• Hydraulic actuator systems

• Hydraulic power units (HPUs)

2. Where It Is Located

Reservoir baffle plates are installed inside the hydraulic reservoir tank.

Common placement includes:

• Between the return oil inlet and pump suction port

• Inside the hydraulic power unit reservoir

• Along the internal tank structure

• Near the return flow zone of the reservoir

The plate is typically welded or bolted to the interior of the tank.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Improve Oil Cooling

Baffle plates increase oil circulation distance, allowing heat to dissipate.

3.2 Separate Air from Hydraulic Fluid

They slow the oil flow, allowing trapped air bubbles to rise and escape.

3.3 Allow Contaminant Settling

Dirt and particles settle at the bottom of the tank before reaching the pump.

3.4 Prevent Pump Cavitation

By stabilizing fluid flow, the pump receives clean and air-free oil.

4. How It Works

Reservoir baffle plates control oil flow inside the hydraulic tank.

Typical operation process:

1. Hydraulic oil returns to the reservoir from the hydraulic system.

2. The baffle plate blocks direct flow to the pump suction.

3. Oil is forced to circulate through the tank.

4. Heat dissipates and air bubbles rise to the surface.

5. Clean oil reaches the pump suction zone.

This improves hydraulic fluid quality and system reliability.

5. Types of Reservoir Baffle Plates

Fixed Welded Baffle Plate

Permanently welded inside the reservoir tank.

Removable Baffle Plate

Bolted or removable plates for easier tank maintenance.

Multi-Chamber Baffle System

Reservoirs with several baffles for large hydraulic systems.

Perforated Baffle Plate

Includes holes to control flow rate and reduce turbulence.

6. Construction & Materials

Reservoir baffle plates are typically manufactured from durable metal materials.

Common materials include:

• Carbon steel plate

• Stainless steel

• Aluminum (in lightweight reservoirs)

Important structural features include:

• Flat internal divider plate

• Welded mounting supports

• Flow control openings or slots

• Structural reinforcement ribs

These materials ensure long-term durability inside hydraulic tanks.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when designing reservoir baffles.

Important considerations include:

• Tank capacity and oil volume

• Hydraulic pump flow rate

• Oil cooling requirements

• Air separation efficiency

• Ease of cleaning and maintenance

Proper baffle design ensures efficient hydraulic system operation.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Reservoir baffle plates must withstand:

• Continuous oil flow pressure

• Hydraulic fluid turbulence

• Temperature fluctuations

• Mechanical vibration from pumps

Industrial designs ensure long service life.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines generate continuous hydraulic flow cycles. Proper baffle design prevents aeration and stabilizes hydraulic pressure.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines use larger hydraulic systems that require multiple baffle plates for proper oil conditioning.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge machines use smaller hydraulic reservoirs with single or simplified baffle plate designs.

12. Common Failure Causes

Reservoir baffle plates may experience issues due to:

• Weld fatigue or cracking

• Corrosion from contaminated oil

• Improper reservoir cleaning

• Structural damage during maintenance

Routine inspection helps prevent internal tank failures.

13. Symptoms of Baffle Plate Issues

Technicians may observe:

• Excessive hydraulic oil foaming

• Hydraulic pump cavitation noise

• High oil temperatures

• Reduced hydraulic efficiency

These symptoms may indicate internal reservoir flow problems.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of reservoir baffle plates includes:

• Welding or mounting the plate inside the tank

• Positioning it between return and suction zones

• Ensuring adequate oil flow clearance

• Verifying structural stability

Correct installation ensures proper fluid circulation.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

• Inspecting tank interiors during servicing

• Checking for baffle plate cracks or corrosion

• Cleaning sludge and debris from the tank bottom

• Verifying internal plate integrity

Regular maintenance improves hydraulic system performance.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Reservoir baffle plates are usually replaced during tank repair or refurbishment.

Typical cost ranges include:

Small reservoir baffle plate
$50 – $200

Medium industrial tank baffle
$200 – $800

Large hydraulic reservoir baffle system
$800 – $2,500+

Costs depend on tank size and fabrication requirements.

17. Safety Considerations

Damaged or missing baffle plates may lead to:

• Hydraulic pump cavitation

• Oil aeration and foaming

• Reduced hydraulic pressure stability

• Increased wear on hydraulic components

Proper internal reservoir design is critical for safe hydraulic system operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Reservoir baffle plates support hydraulic fluid conditioning systems used in roll forming machines including:

• Hydraulic cutting systems

• Punch press hydraulics

• Hydraulic actuator systems

• Hydraulic power unit assemblies

• Hydraulic pressure control circuits

They help maintain stable and clean hydraulic fluid circulation.

Engineering Summary
