Reservoir Breather Filter

1. Technical Definition

A reservoir breather filter is a filtration device installed on a hydraulic reservoir tank that allows air to move in and out of the tank while filtering contaminants such as dust, dirt, and moisture.

As hydraulic oil levels change during machine operation, air must enter or leave the reservoir to equalize internal pressure. The breather filter ensures that incoming air is cleaned before entering the hydraulic system.

In roll forming machines, reservoir breather filters protect hydraulic systems used for:

• Hydraulic flying cutoff systems

• Hydraulic punching units

• Hydraulic pressing systems

• Hydraulic actuators

• Hydraulic power units (HPUs)

They play an important role in maintaining hydraulic oil cleanliness and system reliability.

2. Where It Is Located

Reservoir breather filters are installed on the top of the hydraulic reservoir tank.

Common installation locations include:

• Hydraulic power unit reservoirs

• Integrated hydraulic tanks

• Hydraulic system service ports

• Reservoir fill cap assemblies

They are typically mounted at the highest point of the tank to allow proper air exchange.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Filter Incoming Air

The breather filter removes dust and airborne contaminants from incoming air.

3.2 Maintain Reservoir Pressure Balance

It allows air to move in and out of the reservoir as fluid levels change.

3.3 Protect Hydraulic Oil Cleanliness

Filtered air prevents contamination of hydraulic fluid.

3.4 Prevent Moisture Entry

Some breather filters include desiccant materials to absorb moisture.

4. How It Works

The reservoir breather filter operates by filtering air entering the hydraulic tank.

Typical operation process:

1. Hydraulic oil flows out of the reservoir during pump operation.

2. Air enters the reservoir through the breather filter.

3. The filter element traps dust and debris.

4. Clean air enters the tank, equalizing pressure.

5. Returning oil displaces air, which exits through the filter.

This maintains proper pressure balance and clean hydraulic fluid.

5. Types of Reservoir Breather Filters

Standard Air Breather

Basic air filter designed to remove dust particles.

Desiccant Breather Filter

Includes moisture-absorbing material to remove humidity from incoming air.

High-Capacity Industrial Breather

Designed for large hydraulic reservoirs with high airflow requirements.

Breather Fill Cap Combination

Integrated breather filter combined with a reservoir fill cap.

6. Construction & Materials

Reservoir breather filters are manufactured from durable filtration materials.

Common materials include:

• Aluminum or steel housings

• Reinforced polymer housings

• Microfiber filtration media

• Desiccant silica gel materials

Important structural components include:

• Filter housing

• Air filtration element

• Desiccant chamber (if equipped)

• Threaded mounting base

These materials ensure reliable filtration and durability.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting breather filters.

Important considerations include:

• Airflow capacity

• Filtration efficiency

• Moisture removal capability

• Reservoir size compatibility

• Service life of the filter element

Proper filter selection protects hydraulic oil quality.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Reservoir breather filters must withstand:

• Continuous airflow cycles

• Oil vapor exposure

• Industrial temperature changes

• Dust-heavy factory environments

Industrial designs ensure long-term filtration performance.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines generate frequent hydraulic cycles. Proper breather filtration prevents contamination from entering the hydraulic system.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often use large hydraulic systems requiring high-capacity breather filters.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use compact breather filters due to lower oil flow requirements.

12. Common Failure Causes

Reservoir breather filters may fail due to:

• Clogged filter elements

• Moisture saturation in desiccant filters

• Physical damage to the filter housing

• Improper installation

Routine replacement prevents contamination issues.

13. Symptoms of Breather Filter Issues

Technicians may observe:

• Hydraulic oil contamination

• Excessive moisture in hydraulic fluid

• Restricted airflow causing pressure imbalance

• Dirt accumulation inside the reservoir

These symptoms indicate breather filter problems.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of reservoir breather filters includes:

• Mounting the filter on the reservoir top port

• Ensuring correct thread size compatibility

• Installing a proper sealing gasket

• Confirming unobstructed airflow

Correct installation ensures effective air filtration.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

• Inspecting the breather filter regularly

• Replacing clogged filter elements

• Checking desiccant color indicators

• Cleaning external filter housings

Regular maintenance ensures reliable filtration performance.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Reservoir breather filters vary depending on filtration capability.

Typical price ranges include:

Standard breather filter
$20 – $60

Industrial breather filter
$60 – $200

Desiccant moisture breather
$200 – $600+

Costs depend on airflow capacity and filtration type.

17. Safety Considerations

A clogged or damaged breather filter may lead to:

• Hydraulic oil contamination

• Moisture entering the system

• Pressure imbalance in the reservoir

• Reduced hydraulic system reliability

Proper breather filtration protects the hydraulic system.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Reservoir breather filters support hydraulic systems used in roll forming machines including:

• Hydraulic power units

• Hydraulic cutting systems

• Punch press hydraulics

• Hydraulic actuator systems

• Hydraulic pressure control circuits

They protect hydraulic fluid quality and maintain proper reservoir ventilation.

Engineering Summary

The reservoir breather filter is an air filtration device that allows clean air to enter hydraulic reservoirs while blocking contaminants.

It:

• Filters incoming air

• Maintains reservoir pressure balance

• Prevents dust contamination

• Protects hydraulic fluid quality

• Supports reliable hydraulic system operation

Reservoir breather filters are essential components in roll forming machine hydraulic systems, ensuring clean and properly ventilated hydraulic reservoirs.
