Sequence Valve

1. Technical Definition

A sequence valve is a pressure-controlled hydraulic valve that ensures hydraulic actuators operate in a specific order within a hydraulic circuit. The valve opens only when hydraulic pressure reaches a preset level, allowing fluid to flow to the next actuator in the sequence.

Sequence valves are commonly used in hydraulic systems where multiple operations must occur in a controlled order. The valve holds back hydraulic flow until the first operation is completed and pressure increases to the required level.

In roll forming machines, sequence valves are used in hydraulic systems controlling:

Hydraulic flying cutoff systems
Hydraulic punching units
Hydraulic clamping systems
Hydraulic pressing systems
Hydraulic actuator coordination circuits

They are essential for maintaining correct operational sequencing in complex hydraulic systems.

2. Where It Is Located

Sequence valves are installed within hydraulic circuits that require controlled operation order.

Common installation locations include:

Hydraulic manifold control blocks
Hydraulic actuator circuits
Hydraulic power unit distribution lines
Hydraulic sequencing systems for cutting and punching

They are typically installed between two hydraulic actuators in a circuit.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Control Hydraulic Operation Order

Ensures one hydraulic function occurs before another.

3.2 Release Flow at a Preset Pressure

Opens only when system pressure reaches a defined value.

3.3 Coordinate Multiple Hydraulic Actuators

Allows machines to perform sequential operations.

3.4 Stabilize Hydraulic Process Timing

Ensures consistent operational cycles.

4. How It Works

A sequence valve operates using pressure sensing and a spring-loaded valve mechanism.

Typical operation process:

Hydraulic oil flows toward the sequence valve.

The valve remains closed while pressure is below the preset level.

The first actuator in the circuit operates normally.

Once the actuator reaches the end of its stroke, pressure increases.

When pressure reaches the preset value, the sequence valve opens.

Hydraulic oil flows to the next actuator in the system.

This allows the second operation to begin.

This mechanism ensures proper operation sequencing.

5. Types of Sequence Valves

Direct-Acting Sequence Valve

Operates directly based on hydraulic pressure.

Pilot-Operated Sequence Valve

Uses pilot pressure to control valve operation.

Adjustable Sequence Valve

Allows technicians to adjust the pressure setting.

Manifold-Mounted Sequence Valve

Installed within hydraulic manifold blocks.

6. Construction & Materials

Sequence valves are manufactured from materials designed to withstand hydraulic pressure and continuous operation.

Common materials include:

Hardened steel valve bodies
Precision-machined spools or poppets
High-strength compression springs
Oil-resistant sealing O-rings

Important structural components include:

Valve body housing
Pressure sensing chamber
Internal spool or poppet
Spring adjustment mechanism
Hydraulic inlet and outlet ports

These components ensure reliable pressure-based operation.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting sequence valves.

Important considerations include:

Required pressure sequencing level
Hydraulic flow capacity
Actuator load requirements
Adjustability of pressure settings
Compatibility with hydraulic oil

Proper valve selection ensures accurate hydraulic sequencing.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Sequence valves must withstand:

High hydraulic pressures
Pressure spikes during actuator operation
Continuous oil flow
Thermal expansion of hydraulic oil

Industrial sequence valves are designed for long service life.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines rely on accurate hydraulic timing. Sequence valves ensure operations such as clamping, punching, and cutting occur in the correct order.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often require high-pressure sequence valves to coordinate powerful hydraulic actuators.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller sequence valves designed for moderate hydraulic pressures.

12. Common Failure Causes

Sequence valves may fail due to:

Hydraulic contamination entering the valve
Incorrect pressure adjustment
Internal spool wear
Spring fatigue

Maintaining clean hydraulic oil helps prevent valve failure.

13. Symptoms of Sequence Valve Issues

Technicians may observe:

Hydraulic functions operating out of order
Actuators not activating
Delayed machine operations
Hydraulic pressure instability

These symptoms may indicate sequence valve malfunction.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of sequence valves includes:

Installing the valve in the correct circuit location
Setting the correct pressure adjustment
Ensuring secure hydraulic connections
Testing sequencing operation after installation

Correct installation ensures reliable operation order.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting valves during hydraulic system servicing
Checking pressure adjustment settings
Cleaning valves if contamination is present
Replacing worn internal components

Regular maintenance ensures reliable hydraulic sequencing.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Sequence valve costs vary depending on size and pressure rating.

Typical price ranges include:

Small hydraulic sequence valve
$120 – $350

Industrial sequence valve
$350 – $900

Heavy-duty high-pressure sequence valve
$900 – $2,500+

Costs depend on valve capacity and design.

17. Safety Considerations

A faulty sequence valve may lead to:

Incorrect machine operation order
Hydraulic system malfunction
Damage to hydraulic components
Potential operator safety hazards

Maintaining properly functioning sequence valves is essential for safe machine operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Sequence valves support hydraulic systems used in roll forming machines including:

Hydraulic power units
Hydraulic cutting systems
Punch press hydraulics
Hydraulic clamping circuits
Hydraulic actuator coordination systems

They ensure hydraulic operations occur in the correct sequence.

Engineering Summary

The sequence valve is a pressure-controlled hydraulic valve that ensures actuators operate in a specific order.

It:

Opens when hydraulic pressure reaches a preset level
Controls the sequence of hydraulic operations
Coordinates multiple hydraulic actuators
Maintains correct machine cycle timing
Improves hydraulic system reliability

Sequence valves are critical components used in roll forming machine hydraulic sequencing systems.
