Tube Sleeve

1. Technical Definition

A tube sleeve, also known as a ferrule, is a small cylindrical metal component used in hydraulic tube fittings to create a secure, leak-resistant connection between hydraulic tubing and a fitting body.

The tube sleeve sits between the tube nut and the fitting body. When the tube nut is tightened, the sleeve compresses around the outer surface of the tube and against the fitting seat, forming a tight mechanical grip and a pressure-resistant seal.

In roll forming machines, tube sleeves are commonly used in hydraulic tubing systems supporting:

Hydraulic flying cutoff systems
Hydraulic punching units
Hydraulic pressing systems
Hydraulic actuator circuits
Hydraulic power unit distribution systems

They are critical components used in compression and flare-type hydraulic tube fittings.

2. Where It Is Located

Tube sleeves are installed inside hydraulic tube fittings at the connection point between tubing and hydraulic components.

Common installation locations include:

Hydraulic power unit piping systems
Hydraulic manifold connections
Hydraulic valve assemblies
Hydraulic cylinder supply lines
Hydraulic pressure gauge tubing

They are positioned between the tube nut and the fitting body.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Create Hydraulic Seals

Compression of the sleeve forms a leak-resistant seal.

3.2 Grip Hydraulic Tubing

The sleeve bites slightly into the tube surface to secure it.

3.3 Distribute Compression Force

Transfers force from the tube nut to the tube and fitting body.

3.4 Maintain Secure Tube Connections

Prevents hydraulic tubing from slipping out of the fitting.

4. How It Works

A tube sleeve works by compressing around the hydraulic tube.

Typical operation process:

The hydraulic tube is inserted into the fitting body.

The tube sleeve is placed over the tube.

The tube nut is threaded onto the fitting body.

As the nut is tightened, it pushes the sleeve forward.

The sleeve compresses against the tube and fitting seat.

The compression forms a strong mechanical grip and hydraulic seal.

Hydraulic oil flows through the tube while the connection remains sealed.

5. Types of Tube Sleeves

Single Ferrule Sleeve

Uses a single compression ring to grip and seal the tube.

Double Ferrule Sleeve

Uses two ferrules for improved sealing and tube grip.

Flare Sleeve

Used with flared tubing systems.

Heavy-Duty Hydraulic Sleeve

Designed for high-pressure industrial hydraulic systems.

6. Construction & Materials

Tube sleeves are manufactured from durable metals designed to withstand hydraulic pressure and mechanical compression.

Common materials include:

Carbon steel
Stainless steel
Brass (for low-pressure systems)
Zinc-plated steel for corrosion protection

Important structural characteristics include:

Precision cylindrical shape
Internal bore for tubing
Compression surface
Hardened metal construction

These features ensure reliable hydraulic sealing.

7. Design Considerations

Engineers consider several factors when selecting tube sleeves.

Important considerations include:

Tube diameter compatibility
Hydraulic pressure rating
Material hardness and durability
Corrosion resistance
Compatibility with the fitting type

Proper sleeve selection ensures reliable hydraulic system performance.

8. Load & Stress Conditions

Tube sleeves must withstand:

High hydraulic pressure
Compression forces from the tube nut
Machine vibration
Thermal expansion from heated hydraulic oil

Industrial sleeves are designed for long service life.

9. High-Speed Production Considerations

High-speed roll forming machines generate vibration and pressure fluctuations. Properly installed tube sleeves ensure hydraulic tubing remains securely sealed during continuous machine operation.

10. Heavy Gauge Applications

Heavy gauge roll forming machines often operate with higher hydraulic pressures and require hardened tube sleeves designed for industrial hydraulic systems.

11. Light Gauge Applications

Light gauge roll forming machines typically use smaller tube sleeves for moderate hydraulic pressure circuits.

12. Common Failure Causes

Tube sleeves may fail due to:

Improper installation
Overtightening of tube nuts
Incorrect sleeve size
Corrosion or material fatigue

Routine inspection helps prevent connection failure.

13. Symptoms of Tube Sleeve Issues

Technicians may observe:

Hydraulic oil leaks at tube connections
Loose hydraulic tubing
Hydraulic pressure loss
Damaged or crushed ferrules

These symptoms may indicate sleeve failure.

14. Installation Requirements

Proper installation of tube sleeves includes:

Cutting and deburring the hydraulic tube
Sliding the sleeve over the tube before installing the nut
Inserting the tube fully into the fitting body
Tightening the tube nut to the correct torque

Correct installation ensures reliable hydraulic sealing.

15. Maintenance Requirements

Routine maintenance should include:

Inspecting tube connections for leaks
Checking tube nuts for tightness
Inspecting sleeves for deformation or wear
Replacing damaged sleeves when necessary

Regular maintenance ensures reliable hydraulic tubing connections.

16. Typical Replacement Cost

Tube sleeve costs vary depending on size and material.

Typical price ranges include:

Small hydraulic tube sleeve
$2 – $8

Industrial hydraulic tube sleeve
$8 – $30

Heavy-duty hydraulic tube sleeve
$30 – $100+

Costs depend on size and material.

17. Safety Considerations

A damaged tube sleeve may lead to:

Hydraulic oil leaks
Loss of hydraulic pressure
Machine malfunction
High-pressure fluid hazards

Maintaining properly installed tube sleeves is essential for safe hydraulic system operation.

18. Role in Roll Forming Machine Assemblies

Tube sleeves support hydraulic systems used in roll forming machines including:

Hydraulic power units
Hydraulic cutting systems
Punch press hydraulics
Hydraulic actuator circuits
Hydraulic pressure monitoring circuits

They ensure secure hydraulic tubing connections throughout the hydraulic system.

Engineering Summary

The tube sleeve is a compression component used in hydraulic fittings to secure and seal hydraulic tubing.

It:

Compresses around hydraulic tubing
Creates leak-resistant hydraulic seals
Provides mechanical grip on the tube
Transfers compression force from the tube nut
Maintains secure hydraulic connections

Tube sleeves are essential components used in hydraulic tube fitting assemblies in roll forming machines.
