Voltage Monitoring Relay

1. Technical Definition

A voltage monitoring relay is an electrical protection device used to monitor the voltage level of an electrical power supply and detect abnormal conditions.

It continuously measures the incoming electrical voltage and activates a protective response when voltage levels move outside preset limits.

In roll forming machines, voltage monitoring relays are used to protect electrical equipment from conditions such as:

• Overvoltage

• Undervoltage

• Voltage fluctuations

• Unstable power supply

Sensitive electrical components that rely on stable voltage include:

• PLC control systems

• Variable frequency drives (VFDs)

• Servo drives

• Control transformers

• Power supply units

The relay ensures the machine only operates when voltage conditions are safe.

2. Where It Is Located

Voltage monitoring relays are typically installed inside the electrical control cabinet of the roll forming machine.

Common installation locations include:

• Main power distribution sections

• Electrical protection circuits

• Control system protection areas

• Motor drive protection panels

They are commonly mounted on DIN rails near circuit breakers and protection relays.

3. Primary Functions

3.1 Detect Overvoltage

The relay detects when voltage rises above safe operating limits.

3.2 Detect Undervoltage

It identifies when voltage drops below acceptable levels.

3.3 Protect Electrical Equipment

The relay prevents machines from operating under unsafe voltage conditions.

3.4 Improve Power System Reliability

It helps maintain stable electrical operation.

4. How It Works

Voltage monitoring relays continuously measure the electrical supply voltage.

Typical operation process:

1. The relay connects to the electrical supply voltage.

2. Internal circuits measure the voltage level.

3. The relay compares the measured voltage to preset limits.

4. If voltage exceeds safe limits, the relay activates an output signal.

5. The machine may shut down or prevent startup.

This prevents electrical damage from abnormal voltage conditions.

5. Types of Voltage Monitoring Relays

Overvoltage Relay

Detects voltage levels above safe operating limits.

Undervoltage Relay

Detects voltage levels below safe operating limits.

Combined Voltage Monitoring Relay

Monitors both overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.

Programmable Voltage Monitoring Relay

Allows adjustable protection settings.
