Altman suits machine shops, fabricators and maintenance departments that want to inspect a used machine in person before buying, and choose from a large stock. With several hundred lathes, mills, drill presses and shears in a heated Chicago warehouse, most of them viewable under power, buyers can compare machines side by side. It's a good fit for shops needing everyday workhorse machines, manual or CNC from brands such as Mori Seiki, Mazak and Okuma, at used prices, with the reassurance of a 30-day return privilege. Full Description
Howard Altman founded Altman Machinery in 1980 in a three-story warehouse west of downtown Chicago. His son Steve joined in 1990, and as the business outgrew its first site it moved to its current home on Chicago's south-west side: two buildings with about 75,000 sq ft of heated warehouse.
Altman is a stocking dealer, so it owns the machines it sells, and it typically holds several hundred lathes, mills, drill presses and shears, with new stock arriving continually. Its inventory covers more than 50 categories, from air compressors to welding equipment, including CNC machinery from Mori Seiki, Mazak and Okuma, grinders, presses and saws. Most machines can be seen running under power, and detailed specifications, photos and videos are available for most items.
The company is a member of the Machinery Dealers National Association, and its machines carry the MDNA 30-day return privilege. It also provides appraisals, liquidations, trade-ins and financing, and draws on a national and international network of contacts to source machines.
